next log- Charleston to Maine 2007

We've been enjoying the Bahamas very much.  After crossing the Gulf Stream, we went to Great Sale Cay, which is an uninhabited island. We spent the next day there sleeping & recovering from the rough ride over.  Then we headed to Green Turtle Cay (aka "GTC") to check in.  That procedure turned to out to be easy & friendly, and the officials gave the boat 6 months and us 120 days on our visas to visit.  If we wanted to stay longer we can renew the visas.  We rode our bikes around GTC and did some shopping.  We met Rachel & Steve off of Silk Road (an Endeavor power catamaran) and John & Patty off of Peregrin (a blue sloop).  The rest of the Intracoastal Waterway friends - Helen & Doug on Morning Glory, a Catana Catamaran, Taff & Dillys on their steel ketch Taff-O-Dyl, and Ernie & Marguerite on Elysium IV, also a ketch, followed in a few days and we had a happy reunion. They wisely waited for flat seas to make the crossing.

Since then we've been circling the sea of Abaco, visiting places like:

  •  Marsh Harbor
  •  Hopetown (where the famous lighthouse is)
  •  Great Guana Cay (where the fun bar "Nippers" is located). We went to the Barefoot Man concert there.
  •  Man-O- War Cay, where they build boats and we went for a long walk
  •  Treasure Cay
  •  Lubbers Quarters
  •  Tilloo Cay
  •  Lynyard Cay
  •  Little Harbor (where Pete's Pub is)
  •  Bight of Old Robinson- saw Blue Holes

Susan's sister Fae & her friend Lynn came out to visit, and danced the night away in bars & pubs throughout the islands.  The following week, Suzy,Wes & Liza, our neighbors from Maryland, came out and did a lot of sailing and snorkeling.

It takes a while to get used to the clarity of the water- sometimes you think you're going to run aground, and then you look at the depth sounder, and it says 15 feet!

There have been a couple of days with high winds (30-40 knots) but they are usually predicted with a lot of advance warning, since they come off the Florida coast.
